No internet
There's no internet or mobile signal inside Raufarhólshellir. We had to bring in all the equipment and lay 400 meters of fiber into the cave to deliver high-speed internet.

Fenris Creations
“How do we stream a video game in real time from a cave deep underground?” That's the question we helped Fenris Creations answer when they premiered a new expansion live from Raufarhólshellir.

Fenris Creations came to us with one of the most fun projects we've ever taken on: streaming the EVE Online Catalyst expansion premiere live from Raufarhólshellir lava cave! The setting is spectacular, but the infrastructure for an event of this kind and scale is another story. We put our leading experts on the case to deliver the fast, stable connection needed for tens of thousands of viewers around the world to watch the premiere in real time.

Can you stream a video game in real time from a cave 400 meters underground, with zero signal? You bet! Raufarhólshellir has breathtaking scenery but no telecom coverage at all. To premiere EVE Online Catalyst live, we had to rethink everything from scratch. Nova ran 400 meters of fiber into the cave and set up a rock-solid connection in tough conditions. The result: a flawless live-streamed premiere for viewers all over the world.

SERVICE
There was no obvious blueprint. Nothing like this had been done in Iceland before, so we had to work it out from scratch: how could we bring a stable connection into the cave while protecting the environment, keeping visitors safe and preserving the experience?

Nova ran a 400-meter fiber connection into Raufarhólshellir so the event could be streamed live and EVE Online played in real time from inside the cave. The connection had to be secure and stable while protecting the environment, keeping visitors safe and preserving the experience.

The partnership let Fenris premiere EVE Online Catalyst in unforgettable style, from one of the most spectacular settings in Iceland. Viewers watched a stream from inside a cave, players experienced the game in real time, and the tech made the moment possible without stealing the show. When your big idea is streaming a video game live from the depths of the earth, the connection simply has to work. Nova helped Fenris make sure the moment made it all the way to the audience.

The Catalyst expansion is very much a return to EVE Online's roots. So it felt fitting to premiere it as a 'lava stream' from the depths of the earth, in the amazing setting of Raufarhólshellir.
